Tips For A Safe And Quick Recovery After Head And Neck Surgery

Recovery from a head and neck surgery varies from person to person. For some, it may be a daunting ordeal, but for others might find it just easy to handle. Here are some of the many things you can do to get back into good shape after going under the knife.

While still in the hospital after undergoing head and neck surgery, expect that you will receive fluids intravenously. This will be done until your body is already able to tolerate regular intake of liquids without feeling nauseated and when you have regained your normal appetite. Eat only healthy and wholesome food rich in fiber and iron. When constipated, take whole grain cereals, fresh fruits and juices.

You normally stay in the hospital up to 2 days after the head and neck surgery. Your medical attendants will monitor your progress and from there, they will decide whether you are ready to be discharged and continue with your post operative at home. Factors like home care help is important and will help determine if you can be sent home already or not.

Safe And Quick Recovery

Proper hygiene is crucial for a safe recovery. Taking a shower after head and neck surgery is not prohibited. However, you have to take extra precaution and attend to your incision very well. Make sure that it is properly protected and that it will not get in contact with anything other than the medication applied to it to aid in the healing process. The nurse will help you in cleaning up so observe the steps and do the same at home.

To help speed up the healing process following head and neck surgery, it would be best to do gentle exercises recommended by your medical practitioners. You may be given an exercise program for you to follow to allow your muscles to flex. An easy start would be to do short, slow walks to mobilize your body and prevent muscle cramps.

Remember to keep things in moderation. Though there may be a long list of recommended things to do and not to do, you should be able to sense if there is a need to stop or go and challenge yourself further to do more.

How Sinus Surgeons Perform The Operation

Sinusitis is a common disease that can easily be cured with the use of medicines, especially antibiotics.  Sometimes, when all medications have been taken and the infection still persists, which is the reason why sinus surgeons suggest that the patient undergo an operation specifically to address the case.

Simply put, the objective of sinus surgeons is to eradicate the patient’s problems and discomforts brought about by an infection called sinusitis. They ought to perform an operation on the infected part.  It is that area where there is already swelling of the sinus which is the mean reason why water and other forms of secretions are not able to flow from the nose.

When a patient undergoes the operation, especially in cases of chronic or severe chronic sinusitis, the sinus surgeons will work on the dead cells where the tissues are eliminated.  This way, the passage way for the secretions can then freely flow through the nose.

Sinus surgeons do it in three ways. One is the functional endoscopic sinus surgery or FESS where an endoscope is introduced through the nose for the operation to be completed. Another form is the image guided surgery in which a three dimensional mapping system is being utilized to pay more attention to the sensitive area of the sinus and the nerves linked to the eyes and the brain. The third kind is the Caldwell Luc whereby the sinus is worked on through the upper jaw.

In performing the operation, sinus surgeons should first administer anesthesia to the patient. The kind of anesthesia to be used will all depend on the health condition of the patient before the surgery.

It should be noted that there are various medications available today to cure sinusitis. Even our own mothers have their own way of relieving us of the infection through home treatments. However, when all of these have not produced positive results, sinus surgeons will advise operation on the infected area.

What Thyroid Surgeons Will Do To Cure Your Thyroid Problems

A patient having hyperthyroidism who has taken various means to cure him or her of the disease to no avail can be recommended to see thyroid surgeons. Surgery will be needed for cases like thyroid cancer or when there is already difficulty in breathing or swallowing.

One kind of operation that thyroid surgeons do is the total thyroidectomy. This is most commonly done to treat thyroid cancer, including anaplastic and medullary cancers, Grave’s disease and goiter. The whole of the thyroid gland is removed along with the neighboring lymph nodes there.

Thyroid Surgeons

Thyroid surgeons can also perform subtotal thyroidectomy in which only about have of the thyroid gland is taken out. The other half is supposed to provide the thyroid hormones needed by the body. Reasons for doing this type of surgery include removing a tumor growth in the thyroid or reducing the size of the goiter. This, however, can bring about vocal chords paralysis and harm to the parathyroid glands which are grave complications why it is not always recommended to all patients.

Another kind of surgery done by thyroid surgeons is the thyroid lobectomy where only about one fourth of the thyroid gland is eradicated. This is undergoes a laboratory process to know whether it is benign or cancerous. If it is the former, the incision is then closed and the surgery is finished. However, if tests reveal it is cancer, total thyroidectomy should be performed then.

Expert thyroid surgeons will work on a patient’s thyroid condition depending on the severity of the condition and his or her total well being. There are different aspects which a doctor should consider before proceeding with any kind of surgery on a patient.

Typically, operation on the thyroid is a safe procedure being done by skilled thyroid surgeons. You just have to find the best surgeon there is by asking for recommendations from friends and relatives who have had the same condition as yours.
